All I was looking for was something to do creatively after our first child was born," states designer Jan Schmidt when asked how she became involved in quilting. An admirer of folk art and antique quilts, this Arizona native now finds herself in the thick of it living "down South."

Schmidt began like many others, taking classes and just doing it on her own. She has designed and created two block-of-the-month designs for Home & Garden Television's website, HGTV.com and has appeared on Simply Quilts. Typically drawn to classical quilt designs and fabrics, Schmidt continued to challenge herself in the area of contemporary designs. Jan’s designs have also been spotted at a HGTV network party and film production in celebrity gift bags.

Fast-forward a few years, and Schmidt now has taken a different interest and approach in the world of fiber arts. She’s now exploring the world of knitting with wool fibers, but has taken it to a different dimension. No longer a taboo, this designer will use hot water to achieve her end result of a felted art piece. “I have found another craft which allows me to express myself artistically.”

Schmidt has discovered creativity in purse, handbag, and scarf design. “I’m always looking for a creative outlet … who knows where this venture will take me.” Schmidt resides in East Tennessee with her husband, two children and the family dog.
